Winter Flare ups
Winter conditions especially in Canada can create and flare up quite a few different skin conditions or create new ones without proper preventative and treatment measures. Here with DermaDex we can present patients with a possible diagnosis as well as treatment plans that can assist day to day life. Here is a brief list of some of those conditions.
WINTER RASH
Sometimes referred to as winter itch, this common condition is caused by the cold, dry air outside and the heated air inside. It normally presents itself as dry, itchy, red, flaky skin during the winter months but thankfully there is many treatments options to assist in comfort with day to day life. some of those treatments include:
- Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Staying hydrated will help your skin stay healthy.
- Moisturize your skin frequently. Apply a moisturizer after each bath or shower and several times throughout the day.
- Choose a moisturizer made for dry skin and avoid products containing fragrance.
- Use a mild soap that is designed for sensitive skin instead.
- Finally, wear gloves when you are outside in the cold weather to protect your hands from the cold air and wind.
ROSACEA
Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness, flushing, and bumps and can be exacerbated by cold weather. Many of these treatment options are similar to winter rash, here are the more common measures to dealing with Rosacea;
- Avoid prolonged exposure to cold wind with uncovered skin
- Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated
- Apply an occlusive moisturizer regularly, and always dress appropriately when going outside.
PSORIASIS
There are many factors that can contribute to Psoriasis flare ups during winter time. The first being the cold and dry air exposure can lead to irritation. The second major cause may be due to stress during the winter months which current research has shown can lead to flare ups. While there may not be a direct cure there are treatments that can help patients live more comfortably, these consist of;
- calming treatments can help alleviate symptoms, including hydrocortisone
- vitamin D, and vitamin A creams
